Oblong with gadrooned borders, the high-domed cover surmounted by a flower-head calyx and reeded handle with lion's-head joins, the dish engraved on each side with a crest, the cover engraved on one side with accolé Royal arms, marked on dish, cover and calyx, the Sheffield-plated stand on four paw feet, with gadrooned borders, with conforming warming-pan and liner, mark of Matthew Boulton, Birmingham on warming-pan

Lot Essay

The engraved arms are those of Battenberg accolé with the Royal arms of Great Britain with those of Saxony in pretence, for H.R.H. Prince Henry Maurice of Battenberg KG, who married in 1885 Princess Beatrice, 5th daughter of Queen Victoria. These dishes formed part of an extensive service by Paul Storr, weighing a total of 4882oz., which sold from Princess Beatrice's apartments at Kensington Palace at Christie's on May 4, 1932. Two of the oblong entrée dishes (originally a set of four) sold in these Rooms, October 20, 1998, lot 324.
