FROM THE LODGES OF THE SYMINGTON PORT COMPANIES
Sarah Bradford subtitled her book on Port 'The Englishman's wine'; and it is significant that English families still own - make and market - the best known vintage brands. The Symingtons have an excellent portfolio which includes Graham, Dow, Warre and Quinta do Vesúvio, also represented below, and their remarkably good 'second eleven' Smith Woodhouse, Gould Campbell and Quarles Harris. Graham--Vintage 1963
For long one of my favorite Ports, I first visited Graham's dim and dusty 'lodge' in Vila Nova de Gaia in September 1953.
Ten autumns later came the superb 1963 vintage, bottled in 1965 since when I have enjoyed tasting it on some three dozen occasions. Fully mature now and still delectable. MB
