COTE-ROTIE OF THE GREAT 1998 VINTAGE FROM THE CELLARS OF E. GUIGAL, CHATEAU D'AMPUIS
Guigal is Côte-Rôtie. One man, Marcel Guigal is single handedly responsible for the renaissance of this very old established and most northerly region of the Rhône. Founded by his father Etienne in 1946, at a time when the steep vineyards had been largely abandonded, Marcel joined the small family business in 1961, which in the 1980's took off - thanks to immensely hard work, brilliant wine making and highly succesful marketing. Clearly his son, also called Etienne, is a "chip off the old block" for when I visited the establishment in the autumn of 2001 I was bowled over by the quality and efficiency - the only cellar I have ever visited where I was totally fascinated by the state of the art bottling line! Côte-Rôtie, La Mouline--Vintage 1998
Rhône. Domaine-bottled: E. Guigal
As stated above, a great vintage. Despite severe April frosts in Côte-Rôtie a faultless growing season. The vines for La Mouline come from the Côte Blonde.
Still opaque in its fourth autumn, a lovely wine, very fragrant, very spicy. Tasted from the cask October 2001. MB
