OUTSTANDING WINES FROM GEORG BREUER, RUDESHEIM
I am tempted to describe Bernhard Breuer , whom I have known for over 20 years, as a maverick. he is an individualist and a genius who makes the finest, most complete of all truly dry German wines.
Forget the ambiguous expression 'trocken', the following quartet of vintages are all made by Breuer from the best vines and best barrels from the steep Berg Schlossberg vineyard slopes above the town of Rüdesheim.
All are truly dry; truly fermented out. The characteristics of all Breuers fine 'Cru' wines are intensity of flavour and great length.
We are in the realm of the finest old style bone dry Chablis, Haut-Brion Blanc or Montrachet even. Breuer unusually, also specialises in large bottles which I have helped consume at many Riesling dinners in the Rheingau. MB
Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg 'Cru'--Vintage 1983
Rheingau. Georg Breuer
A superb vintage following remarkably good, 'unforced' growing conditions. Though many sweet wines have kept well, it is unusual to find even a high quality dry white to survive. Breuer's do, and like dry white wines with bottle age they will have become more golden in colour, changing character and flavour but retaining balance and length of flavour. Now very rare. M.B.
