TOKAJI FROM THE CELLAR OF SZEPSY ISTVAN
Confusingly, in Hungary, christian names and surnames are transposed, Herr Szepsy being one of the most highly regarded producers in the entire Tokaji region. Unhappily he has sold all his older vintages but is offering a superb 6 putts wine of a very good recent vintage. MB
Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 'Kiraly'--Vintage 1996
Hungary: Szepsy Istvan
It is from Kiraly, classified 'first growth' in 1700, that Szepsy produces his finest wine. 1996 is an excellent vintage and 6 putts is high in the sweet Aszú range. Two recent notes, first with Istvan in the strangely named village of Mad, more recently at the Hungarian embassy in Berlin. Colour a glowing amber-gold; fragrant, tangy, orange blossom and vanilla nose; sweet of course but with a delicate touch. Rich, assertive yet elegant. Last tasted in September 2001. M.B.
