Built at Pembroke Dock as the Windsor Castle and launched on 14th September 1852, the day of the Duke of Wellington's death, this splendid 1st Rate was renamed in the old Duke's honour two weeks later on 1st October. Measured at 3,759 tons (5,829 tons displacement) and mounting 131 guns, mostly 32pdrs., she could make just over 10 knots under steam although she also maintained a massive sail plan. After a distinguished career as flagship in the Baltic during the war with Russia in 1854-55, she was relegated to harbour service in 1863 and remained a familiar sight at her permanent moorings in Portsmouth Harbour until finally broken up in 1904.
