Lot Essay

The artist Roger Chapelet sailed on a number of occasions aboard the Sagres, the last in 1978-9. An all-steel vessel built as a sail training ship for the German Navy by Blohm & Voss at Hamburg in 1937, she displaces 1,869 tons and measures 267 feet in length with a 30½ foot beam. In the aftermath of the Second World War she passed into the Brazilian Navy until acquired by the Portuguese Navy in 1962 where she is still in commission.
