Depicted here in the work is the Moi people who is the original inhabitants of the hinterland in Vietnam. The word 'moi' means 'savage' in the Vietnamese language. While looked upon as 'the savage' by the Vietnamese from the low land, the inhabitants (e.g. Jarai, the Rhades and the Sedang) of the remote highland were commonly romanticised by foreign visitors who were frequently writers or painters in the early years of the 20th century.
