The later rectangular verde antico marble top above an egg-and-dart moulded cornice and heavily-carved scrolling pierced foliate frieze centred by a cartouche with the arms of the Mastai-Ferretti family, on scrolled legs joined by a wavy 'X'-stretcher

Lot Essay
Of lower nobility from Sennigallia in the province of Ancona, the Mastai-Ferretti family is remembered most for Giovanni Maria (1792-1878), who as Pius IX, was the longest-serving Pope in history.
