Lot Essay

The present marble study of a female nude relates closely to Dalou's allegorical figure executed during the 1890s entitled La Verité Meconnue (Truth Unacknowledged). Inspiration for the work may have been linked to the highly-publicised Dreyfus Scandal. Himself a dreyfusard, Dalou may have been drawing attention to Dreyfus' innocence, just as Emile Zola did with his famous article J'accuse.
