Lot Essay

The striking early neoclassicism of the lower sections of these candelabra is inspired by French designs of around 1760, for example a pedestal by Philippe Caffièri, supplied to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in that year. That model is illustrated in S. Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, London, 1974, fig. 204.
