Lot Essay

The signature is likely that of Louis-Desiré Barré, a painter specializing in flower painting, employed at the Sèvres factory in the second half of the 19th century and head of the painting workshop as of 1876. It is likely that Barré completed the decoration on the present pair of vases while living in the city of Sèvres but before being employed by the French national ceramic factory of the same name.
