According to Joe Alex Morris in an article found in the archives of The Pompey Collection, the decoration on the present set of plates is likely based on photographs and drawings of foreign pheasants in their natural habitat made circa 1927 as the basis for a special commission, the first such plates made by Lenox. The millionaire who commissioned the first set gave financial backing to the expedition which resulted in six volumes of drawings and photographs. These were then generously left with the factory for future use.
