A ROMAN BRONZE ALLOY CAVALRY PARADE GREAVE WITH FIGURE OF MARS
LATE 2ND/EARLY 3RD CENTURY A.D.
Decorated in high relief with an armed figure of the god Mars who stands with weight on the left leg, holding an upright spear in his right hand, a shield in his left, with high crested helmet over tightly curled hair, wearing greaves and a muscled cuirass bearing a chased Gorgon's mask, a cloak draped over each arm, two curving snakes with detailed scales flank either side, underneath a capricorn in profile to the left with dotted wavy border below, along the right edge a chased figure of Victory with billowing drapery above, below a winged Cupid, the background with chased imbricated pattern, rosettes, spear-shaped leaves and a plant between Mars' legs, four side attachment holes, one with riveted ring-tie still intact, further attachment holes at the top, with dotted inscription along one edge
