Lot Essay

Cf. J. Chamay and J. L. Maier, Art Romain: Sculptures en pierre du Musée de Genève, II, Mainz, 1989, p. 81, no. 105, pl. 99 for similar from Syria. The symbol of the eagle was used as a military emblem by the Roman legions after the reforms of Marius, as well as being an attribute of Jupiter and associated with Helios and Apollo.
