Such fittings were mounted on posts above each wheel of a Roman wagon. Leather straps attached to the two looped arms supported the carriage and served to absorb vibrations. For a reconstruction of a Roman wagon, cf. H. Borger, Das Römisch-Germanische Museum Köln, Munich, 1977, p. 133, no. 124.
