FIVE ROMAN TERRACOTTA OIL LAMPS
CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
Two lamps each depicting the closing phase of a gladiatorial combat, one of the two figures having fallen or thrown down his weapons in defeat, with ring handle and short nozzle, one with impressed inscription on the base "LMVNAMAR"; and three lamps with volutes flanking the nozzle, one depicting an eques at full tilt on horseback, wearing visored helmet and carrying round shield (parma equestris) and sword (gladius), another with warrior shown falling from his horse, "L.M.C" inscribed on the base, and the other depicting two gladiators, one on his knees in defeat, "LMVNSVC" impressed on the base, some with repair
