Manuscript on paper, 9ll. of black naskh within gold rules, gold roundels between verses, black, red, blue rules, gold ruled outer margin, divisions of text marked marginally with illuminated medallions, sura headings in white on gold panels, gold and coloured illuminated opening, second and middle bifolios, Volume II with five illuminated bifolios, final folio with colophon; written for Shaykh Muhammed Abdallah Khan, copied by 'Ali Muhammad living in Amrusa Surat, Volume I dated 15 Dhu'l-hijja 1256, Voloume II dated Rabi 11 1256, original lacquer bindings painted and gilt with flower sprays on a green ground, doublures similarly decorated -- 19.9 x 12.8cm.

Lot Essay

Possibly produced by the Daudi Ismaili community in Surat.
The city of Surat was known as the Gate of Mecca, it being the point of departure for many pilgrims to Arabia.
