NOTE:
Chong Yu was a native of Piling (modern Changzhou, Jiangsu). His surname was Chen, and sobriquet name Yuezhi. Chong Yu went into monkhood aged sixteen, and ended up in a monastery in Yuwang shan. At the start of the Ming dynasty, Chong Yue was invited by the Hongwu emperor to oversee the Buddhist meeting at Zhongshan. Chong wrote extensively on divinity and left quite a number of literary/religious works. For brief biography, see Zhongguo Fojiao Renming Dacidian, Shanghai Cishu Chubanshe, 1999, p.649
