An identical dish was sold in our London Rooms, 6 April 1976, lot 166, and again, in these Rooms, The Jingguantang Collection, 3 November 1996, lot 588.
The present dish is closely related to the 'birthday' dishes, the well-known service which was said to have been made for the celebration of the Emperor Kangxi's 60th birthday in 1713. A varied number of designs were commissioned as part of this set and many of them included birds and flowers, as is the case with the present dish. The size and shape of the dish also compare well with the birthday dishes. However, the present dish lacks the auspicious birthday greeting inscribed on the rim border of the service.
The decoration on this dish relates surprisingly well with that on the yanyan vase in the Palace Museum, Beijing, which is very finely enamelled in the famille verte palette and with gilt with similar birds above a lush lotus pond (see Kangxi Yongzheng Qianlong, Hong Kong, 1989, p. 53, pl. 37). Another similar Kangxi vase is also illustrated by A. du Boulay, op. cit., 1984, p. 186.
