A FINE GREEN-ENAMELLED AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE 'DRAGON' BOWL
KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)

The exterior is enamelled in bright green with two sinuous dragons striding amidst fire-scrolls and clouds in pursuit of flaming pearls, above three tiers of overlapping petals, all against an inky blue ground, the interior with a single dragon contained within the central medallion, each dragon with four claws covered in black enamel

Lot Essay

This design on bowls and dishes is often found with black enamel covering one claw on each hand of the dragon. Compare the present lot with other similar examples, including one in the Baur Collection, illustrated by J. Ayers, The Baur Collection, vol. IV, Geneva, 1974, no. A555; a pair of bowls in the Romer Museum, Hildesheim, illustrated by Wiesner, Chinesisches Porzellan, 1981, pl. 111; and another bowl sold in our London Rooms, 5 December 1994, lot 85.
