After Culloden

Culloden, just east of Inverness, was the battleground of the final Jacobite uprising on 16 April 1746, when the army of the 'Young Pretender', Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), the elder son of the exiled Prince James and his wife, Princess Maria Clementina, was crushed by the government forces led by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765). The Jacobites were vastly outnumbered by Cumberland's troops of 2400 horse and 6400 foot and many were slaughtered. The Prince was forced to flee the battlefield for the places of safety in the Highlands as the Hanoverians were offering a hugh reward of £30,000 for his capture. With the assistance of Flora MacDonald, the Prince returned to France in September of that year, and whilst he returned to England in disguise in 1750, he never raised sufficient funds to mount another rebellion against the Hanoverians. He died in Rome on 31 January 1788.
