Lot Essay

The title of this print is open to several interpretations but the subject is clear. The café-concerts of Montmartre were notorious pick-up spots, as revealed in so many of Lautrec's paintings and prints. Here a figure closely based on his friend Maurice Guibert eyes a potential partner. In the background are the recognizable Gabriel Tapié de Celeyran and Tristan Bernad. The identity of the woman is unknown.
