NOTE:
The epitaph of Dongfang Shuo was written by the great Tang calligrapher, Yan Zhenqing, in the thirteenth year of the Tianbao era (754), when Yan was forty-five. The character 'gui' in the term 'guishi' is whole and not carved out, and the 'chi' in 'qichi' is intact, marking this out to be a rubbing made at least in the Song dynasty before further damage was done to the stone tablet. Any Song rubbing of this is invaluable, as they are so extremely rare. During the Ming, the tablet was already seriously damaged because many rubbings were made, and characters were carved and re-carved, loosing all originality in the calligraphy by Yan Zhengqing.
