Cartier Cartier has been a name synonymous with elegance, innovation and exquisite craftsmanship since 1847 when Louis-Francois Cartier first founded the company in Paris. His three grandsons however, were responsible for establishing the famous world-wide empire with Louis (1875-1942) in Paris, Pierre (1878-1965) in New York and Jacques (1884-1942) in London. Louis, who had always been fascinated by mechanical pocket watches, was eager for the company to build their own watches. He designed the Santos for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904. The Tonneau was introduced in 1906, the Baignoire and Tortue in 1912. With designer Charles Jacqueau and clockmaker Maurice Couet, Cartier produced the legendary mystery clock in 1912. The Tank was introduced in 1917. In the 1920s, Cartier formed the European Watch and Clock Company with Edward Jaeger to produce movements for Cartier. In 1932, a watertight watch made especially for the Pasha of Marrakech, was to become the forefather to the Pasha watches of today. Many of Cartier's contemporary best-selling wristwatches and clocks are revivals of the classical designs based on Louis' archives and inventions.
