Lot Essay

The company of Charles Smith was started in 1799 to sell maps, with Smith advertising himself as "engraver to the Prince of Wales". They had premises at 172 The Strand from 1827 to 1852 and then moved to 63 Charing Cross in 1870, before eventually being taken over by George Philip & Son who reissued the Smith globes. Although the company was fairly prolific, little appears to be recorded of their activity.
