Lot Essay

The motif of three rams, which provides a rebus for the auspicious saying san yang kai tai, 'three yang initiate tai', is a very popular decoration on Chinese porcelain. Ram, which is pronounced 'yang' in Chinese, is homophonous with the Chinese character that denotes 'positive energy', or 'the sun'. Tai is one of the most auspicious hexagrams in the Yijing, The Book of Changes, and is formed with three straight lines, representing yang energy, on top of three broken lines, representing yin energy, hence the saying. It is often employed as signifying the ending of winter and the beginning of spring.
