Lot Essay

The label on the album cover reads Changji (The Chang Company), Duicaochong (various insects), Gongtianhe (probably where the shop is situated). This album was bought in the 1870's by Dr. Matthew Dickson, a missionary doctor working in Formosa (Taiwan) on a smallpox innoculation programme and who returned to Liverpool in the late 1870's. It is now being sold by one of his descendants.
