Lot Essay
The form is probably taken from a Meissen original which was copied by the Bow, Derby, Chelsea and Worcester factories and this example is closest in style to those made at Bow. Bird and animal tureens were very popular on the 18th Century dining table, although one cannot be sure whether tureens of this form were actually used for quail delicacies. Compare the very similar example illustrated by W. R. Sargent, The Copeland Collection, Salem, 1991, no.99, pp.204 and 205. See also the related tureen and cover formerly in the C. T. Loo Collection, Paris, illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, cat. 181, p.192.
