Lot Essay

The composition relates closely to a picture by Vanvitelli, dated 1721, in a private collection, Prague, which is the artist's only known treatment of the subject.

The Piazza Navona was traditionally flooded during the month of August so that members of the city's aristocratic families could circle around it in their carriages, providing a cool respite for those nobles and prelates who had not escaped to their country villas.
