This drawing is probably a preparatory study for a larger pastel of this pose, Après le bain (circa 1892; Lemoisne, no. 1122; coll. Museum of Modern Art, Moscow). There is a second study on a larger sheet (Second studio sale, lot 300), although the image of the figure is about the same size as it is in the present drawing. Degas often employed tracing to transfer imagery from one sheet to another as he developed his subjects in series (see lot 126). It is not clear which of these two preparatory drawings is the initial study. There is also a transfer impression of this subject that was probably made from one of the drawings. This shows the image in reverse, which the artist reworked with pastel (Lemoisne, no. 1122; Fourth studio sale, lot 321).
