Clad in fishnet stockings (with those on her right leg rolled up unglamorously to reveal her thigh), and a bowed ribbon choker, Jacqueline as l'éternel feminin plays the part of a brothel whore. She lays sprawled on a caseuse, a circular sofa topped with an aspidistra plant, a common fixture in turn-of-the-century bordellos. In this series of drawings, inspired by the brothel monotypes of Edgar Degas and the paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec, the roving eye of the artist assumes the roles of client and voyeur.
