August Joseph Peiffer (1832-1870), born in Paris and exhibited mainly classical figures in the salon between 1865 to 1879.
This classically inspired figure group illustrates pastrol love as happy union described by the late Greek writer Longus (3rd or 4th century A.D). The pair were often depicted in Italian baroque painting as shepherds , often with a syrinx.
