Lot Essay

Henri Chapu (1833-1891) had a prolific career, starting at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in 1849. He trained under Pradier and Duret. In 1855 he spent time studying in Italy after winning the Prix de Rome. Following his return he exhibited regularly at the Salons winning the grand medal in 1867. Besides bronze reductions of his numerous public monuments he also produced smaller domestic decorative groups and satuettes.
