Lot Essay

The landscape panels in the upper section of this cabinet are believed to have been painted by Admiral Sir Charles Burrard, 1793-1876, possibly painted on his various voyages. Although not involved in major naval campaigns, he served in anti-smuggling operations in the Channel, was knighted by George III, and retired in 1846. The Burrard family served Lymington for many years, where a monument in the town celebrates Sir Harry Burrard Neale, cousin of Sir Charles.
