A Berlin porcelain tasse trembleuse and saucer
Circa 1765, blue sceptre mark and the saucer impressed K
Painted in puce camaieu with cartouches of putti at play among clouds alternating with cartouches of flower-garlands within shaped moulded foliage gilt-edged scroll borders beneath a pink and gilt-scale border (pierced gallery lacking, cup repaired)

Lot Essay

The putti on the cup are derived from a suite of engravings of the 'Four Elements' by Claude Duflos Le Jeune, after Boucher. The two putti with a quiver of arrows are derived from 'Le Feu' and the other two are derived from 'L'Eau'. In the engraving one putto is holding a fishing net suspended from a rod, and on the cup the same putti holds a bunch of grapes. Both engravings are illustrated by Pierrete Jean-Richard, L'Oeuvre gravé de François Boucher, Paris, 1978, p. 237, no. 911 and 913.

One group of putti on the saucer (with one putto holding a dove) is derived from Jean Daullé's engraving the Naissance et triomphe de Vénus (1750) after Boucher. The same subject was also engraved by Duflos in 1748, but the putti correspond more closely with Daullé's engraving.
