Lot Essay

The design for this service is derived from an earlier service made in 1797 for Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm shortly before he succeeded to the throne. The 18th Century service has slightly darker turquoise borders moulded with white swags, and the angular handles are tied with puce and turquoise striped ribbons. An ice-pail from Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm's service, formerly in the collection of Dr. K.H. Wadsack, was sold in these Rooms on 1st May 2002, lot 97 and is also illustrated by Erich Köllmann and Margarete Jarchow, Berliner Porzellan, Munich, 1987, Vol. II, fig. 308. A further variation of this design had been used in circa 1795 for the last Grand Duke of Courland's service. The moulded borders of the Courland service are exactly the same as Friedrich Wilhelm's service and the present service, but the swags and bands of bead ornament are gilt and large bouquets of flowers are used instead of scattered flower-sprays.
