Two directly comparable crosses to the present lot can be seen in the Musée de Cluny, Paris (Taburet-Delahaye, loc. cit.) and the Kofler collection, Zurich (Schnitzler, Bloch, Ratton, loc. cit.). The hallmarks on the terminals identify their city of origin as Barcelona, with dating varying from the third quarter of the 14th century on the Cluny cross and the beginning of the 15th for the Kofler example. A close inspection of the hallmarks of the present lot indicates a date at the beginning of the 15th century (see Fernández, Munoa, Rabasco, loc. cit. for a list of the hallmarks from Barcelona).
Of the two aforementioned comparables, the Kofler cross is closest stylistically to the present lot; note the repousée scrolling vine leaf running down the body as well as the beaded border decoration. Also comparable are a series of enamel plaques depicting the various scenes from the Passion and the Four evangelists. The central enamel is extremely close to that of the Kofler cross that depicts Christ enthroned in a frontal position and raising two fingers in Benediction.
