En suite with the preceding lot, woven in wools and silks, from the story of Hippolytus and Phaedra from the Heroides, depicting Phaedra making amourous advances to Hippolytus while he departs for the hunt, in a woodland setting, flanked by female caryatids of Hermes and Diana, with lush fruited swags and a central panel inscribed 'HIPPOLITUS ET PHEDRAM'

Phaedra was the daugher of King Minos and wife of Theseus. Hippolytus, the son from a previous marriage of Theseus, was courted by Phaedra. When he rejected her pursuit, she claimed he raped her and then killed herself.
