The provenance of the present picture is exceptionally interesting and important. The same year that he painted it, Sam Francis donated the work to the C.G. Jung Project in Chicago. Like many of the Abstract Expressionists, Francis was a great admirer of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung; as Adolph Gottlieb commented in 1964, "We were all interested. First we discovered Freud, and then Jung..." (quoted in S. Polcari, Abstract Expressionism and the Modern Experience, Cambridge, 1991, p. 43). In particular, Francis found inspiration in Jung's conception of the collective unconscious -- a mythic repository of symbols and archetypes (like the circle and the cross in the present image) shared by all human beings since primitive times. Francis was a key backer of the film Matter of Heart, a documentary about Jung that the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles produced in 1978-1981, and was interviewed in Quadrant: The Journal of Contemporary Jungian Thought four years before his death.
