Lot Essay

The dog portrayed in this work originally belonged to Cecil B. deMille. After his death, the dog was taxidermied. Andy Warhol eventually acquired the stuffed dog, and long cherished it as one of the eccentric decortions of his Upper East Side townhouse. Warhol's penchant for deMille is understandable as the famous director was the first Hollywood impresario to pioneer the "blockbuster" and was the first celebrity director.
