A rare pair of famille rose 'Pronk type' beaker vases
Circa 1740
Enamelled on each side with a parrot clasping a twin cherry in his right claw, the other leg chained to the swing crossbar suspended from a foliate medallion, reserved on a pale turquoise-green ground, the slightly everted rim and foot encircled by a blue ground and iron-red bands

Lot Essay

This design is often associated with the Dutch draughtsman, Cornelis Pronk, whose drawings were transferred onto Chinese export porcelain from about 1743-46. Although there is no actual evidence that this was based on one of his drawings, there are certainly similarities in the combination of colours, features within the design and shape of pieces on which this is found. A bowl with this design from the Martin Hurst Collection is illustrated by G. Williamson. The Book of Famille Rose, 1970, pl. XLII. A garniture of five vases with this design is the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem; and another garniture, from the Collection of Edgar and Hedwig Worch, was sold in our New York Rooms, 2 June 1994, lot 408; and at Christie's Amsterdam, 18 November 1997, lot 114.
