During this period he built up a collection of Chinese ceramics and works of art. Characteristic for his high reputation in China was his friendship with the distinguished statesman Li Hung Chang. Of his honorary titles he received for his work in China, the most important one was his appointment to Mandarin of third degree. He received this title in the third year of the reign of emperor Guangxu, 1878, a title rarely given to foreigners. After he retired to Norway in 1907 he became a successful industrialist and continued his career as a Chinese scholar. Daae was also the author of various books, among them 'The Land Tax in China', which was considered a leading work on the subject. A large part of his collection was acquired by the Oslo Museum.
