NODA NO TAMAGAWA [THE NODA JEWEL RIVER] FROM THE SERIES MUTAMAGAWA [THE SIX JEWEL RIVERS]

Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806)
Noda no Tamagawa [The Noda Jewel River] from the series Mutamagawa [The Six Jewel Rivers]
A Yoshiwara courtesan, possibly the high-ranking Miyahito of the Ogiya, in a pensive moment

The Noda River was widely known as the 'chidori [plover] river' and this popular name dominates the ambience of the present design: the cartouche shows a group of plovers flying over the river and the entire background is blind-printed with a recurring theme of plovers and water. The kyoka poem in the fan-shaped cartouche, by Jingido Michimori, reads:

Meet secretly and make love
by the Jewel River
with the waves as your pillow
the kamuro [junior courtesans] watch the play and learn.

Signed Utamaro hitsu [drawn by Utamaro] and Jingido Michimori (for the poem in the cartouche), published by Matsumura Tatsuemon, very good impression, colour and condition

Oban tate-e: 15 x 10 in. (38.3 x 25.5 cm.)
