Signed Kuroda, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Of squat profile supported on three integral splayed feet, the body of shakudo-coloured metal decorated in gold, silver and copper with a branch of azalea, the lid similarly decorated but with five of the leaves forming the openings, plain silver liner, signed on the base with engraved characters Kuroda tsukuru [made by Kuroda]

Lot Essay

The Kuroda company of Kyoto won medals at several of the later international expositions and was described by the British globe-trotter Herbert Ponting in In Lotus-land Japan (London, 1910).1
