(a1r blank, a1v life of Lucan, a2v apud Corenlium Tacitum legitur, a3r text, kk12r colophon, kk12v blank). 372 leaves. 34 lines. Types: 2:115 (113) R; 115 Greek. 4- to 7-lines Initial spaces at the beginning of each book. (a1r-a2r, ft8v-ft9r soiled, some marginal soiling, final three quires dampstained at lower margin.) Contemporary German blind-stamped calf over oak boards, outer panel of scrolling acanthus leaves, inner diaper panel filled with repeated stamps of a mastiff, unicorn and small rosettes, and with larger rosettes at intersections, metal bosses and clasp plates (recently rebacked, new endpapers). Provenance: Saigan O Dalu, Dublin (19th-century inscription in Gaelic on A1r and colophon) -- Mr. Corlam, Thomas St., Dublin, his gift to: -- Mr. Cullin, Clandalchin Monastery (gift inscription on A1r dated April 1851).
FIRST EDITION, and the only separate incunable edition of Leonicenus's commentary on Lucan (39-65 A.D.). The commentary was first included with the Pharsalia in the edition printed by Jacobus Britannicus, 2 May 1486, and was included in almost all the subsequent editions of Lucan's epic up to 1500. This copy of di Pietro's separate edition retains the boards of an attractive contemporary blind-stamped calf binding, probably by Mair bb of Bamberg (=Ulrich Meyer, K 50). The unicorn stamp is identified in Schwenke-Sammlung 91:26 as Mair's; though Kyriss (pl. 103) does not reproduce the unicorn or any other corresponding tools for this shop. E. Ph. Goldschmidt identified Mair as a Jewish binder responsible for a number of excellent cuir-ciselé bindings (Gothic and Renaissance Book Bindings I, pp. 80-81), but Kyriss doubts that he undertook cuir-ciselé work. HC (+ Add) 10029.; BMC V, 219 (IB. 20128); Polain (B) 4614; IGI 6994; CR 3653; Goff L-172.
