MACROBIUS, Ambrosius Theodosius (fl. early 5th century A.D.). In somnium Scipionis expositio. - Saturnalia. Venice: Philippus Pincius, 29 October 1500.

Collation: a-f6; A-N6 O8 (a1r title, a1v blank, a2r Somnium Scipionis of Cicero, a3v In Somnium Scipionis, f6v first colophon, A1r Saturnalia, O8r second colophon, O8v blank). 122 leaves. 45 lines and headline. Types: 3:108 (110)R.; 80Greekb. Woodcut map on e6r, 7 woodcut diagrams. 8-line woodcut initial on a2r. 3- to 9-line initial spaces, most with guide-letters. (First three leaves with tear at outer margin, slightly affecting text on A3, occasional browning, some marginal waterstains and spotting, D5v-D6r with minor ink splashes.) 16th-century vellum, manuscript title on spine (crinkled). Provenance: Petrus Vasques, purchased at Alcala, for 4½ silver coins, in the year 1516, the year in which the founder of the [Cistercian] college, Cardinal Franciscus Simodes, died (record of purchase on O8v, signed by Vasques).
Sixth edition of Macrobius's two extant works. The commentary on Cicero's Somnium Scipionis used passages in his work to construct 'the most satisfactory and widely read Latin compendium on Neoplatonism that existed during the Middle Ages.' This also became a popular guide to science featuring 'lengthy excursuses on Pythagorean number lore, cosmography, world geography and the harmony of the spheres' (DSB). The woodcut map in the Pincius edition omits the names of the winds and reverses the positions of East and West.
