Collation: a-y8 z10 (a1r blank, a1v verse dedication to Lodovico Sforza, a2r Vocabularis, z8r De quantitate syllabarum, z10r register and collophon, z10v blank). 186 leaves, a2-z9 numbered 2-184, with errors and omissions. 54 lines and foliation, with marginal headings. Opening 13-line white-on-black woodcut initial on A2r. 5- to 6-line initial spaces, with guide-letters. (Some leaves browned, some waterstaining at beginning and end, a few wax and ink stains.) Contemporary limp vellum with manuscript title on spine, calf tie stubs (crinkled and soiled).
Second edition of this Latin dictionary by Nestor, a Franciscan from Novara. Under its unusual arrangement, the word being defined is listed in the right hand margin, an etymological explanation and one or more examples of use are given in the main text, and the names of authors are listed in the left hand margin. First printed by Leonardus Pachel and Uldericus Scinzenzeler (Milan, 1483), the Vocabularius proved popular enough to go through some eight editions by 1507. Anima Mea of Piancereto and Trino in the Duchy of Monferrat, printer of the second edition, first appeared as the partner of Antonello di Barasconi in 1485, but printed alone from August 1486 to November, 1491.
