The Austrian born designer Ettore Sottsass (1917) had already accomplished international fame for his work and even was the centre of a retrospective in the International Design Centre in Berlin in 1976, when he established the Memphis group in 1981. The first Memphis exhibition at the Arc '74 showroom in Milan in 1981 included the sculptural Carlton bookcase, a true token of the Anti-Design Memphis movement in its use of colourful plastic laminates - favoured for its lack of culture. The diagonal supports suggest that books do not always have to stand straight.
