Lot Essay

No visit to Milan by Sickert has been recorded, but the handling of this sketch suggests it belongs to the middle 1880s. Perhaps Sickert stopped off in Milan during his honeymoon tour in 1885, when he and his wife travelled extensively in Europe before renting a house in Dieppe.
